Australia’s Student Visa Rules Have Changed. Your Study Plans Still Deserve a Look.
What the October changes mean, and how to turn uncertainty into a practical education plan.
BigDay Education · Education planning perspective
Reading visa headlines can make studying in Australia feel further away than it did a week ago. If you’re wondering whether to put your plans on hold, take a breath. A headline cannot tell you what your own next step should be.
Start with the change that affects you
From 2 October 2026, Australia introduced new rules about where certain applicants can lodge a Student visa application and receive a grant. Many temporary visa holders, and current students who do not meet a relevant exemption, now need to apply from outside Australia. Read the Home Affairs onshore application guidance.
An offshore application requirement is different from being told you cannot study in Australia. It changes the logistics. You still need to meet the visa requirements, but it is worth understanding the process before abandoning a genuine education goal.
Work backwards from a realistic intake
Our education-planning approach is to start with your course, entry requirements and budget, then build a timeline around them. If overseas travel is needed, allow for that cost and ask the provider about later intakes or deferral conditions before paying a deposit.
Keep your enrolment plan and visa plan connected. A college offer does not establish that you are eligible to apply from your current location, and it does not guarantee a visa.
Home Affairs says applicants who must lodge offshore also need to be offshore at grant. An offshore application does not provide a linked Bridging visa. These details matter when planning accommodation, work and travel. Check the official planning instructions.
Give yourself a useful next step
You don’t have to make every decision today. Gather your academic records, identify a course you genuinely want to complete and find out which intake gives you time to prepare. A well-timed plan is more useful than a rushed application.
