Already Studying in Australia? Plan Your Next Course Before Your Visa Runs Out.

Understand course progression, limited onshore exemptions and the difference between finishing a course and starting another.

BigDay Education · Education planning perspective

Finishing a course should feel like progress. It can also bring a lot of questions: What should I study next? Can I apply from Australia? How much time do I have? The best place to start is with your current course records and visa dates.

Further study needs a fresh check

The October 2026 rules mean current Student visa holders generally need to apply offshore for another Student visa unless they meet a limited exemption. The changes do not alter your existing Student visa. Read the current onshore rules.

Course progression can matter

One exemption concerns students who have completed their main AQF qualification and are moving to a higher AQF level. After a higher education course, the next course must also be higher education at a higher education provider. Simply selecting another course does not establish eligibility.

A separate exemption may apply when a student needs up to 12 additional months after the original course end date to finish with the same provider. For packaged courses, it concerns the main course. This is about completion time, not a general rule that a new course must last 12 months.

Other exemptions exist, including certain PhD, school and provider-default situations. A student dependant moving to primary applicant must apply offshore; that rule has no exemption. Check the full exemption list.

Choose the next course for its value

From an education agent’s perspective, the useful conversation is about what you have learned and what skills you still need. Look at the subjects, entry requirements and expected workload. A higher-level qualification only makes sense if it fits your goals and you are ready for it.

Bring your transcript, completion evidence, current CoE and proposed course details to your consultation. Ask an authorised migration professional to check where you can lodge before you pay for a new enrolment.

If offshore lodgement is needed, discuss intake dates and any deferral options with the provider. Changing your timeline can be disappointing, but a considered next step can still support the future you are working towards.
